EAST ALTON - The East Alton Police Department is warning residents about a recent surge in scams targeting area citizens, urging people to stop and verify any request for money before sending it.
The police department said the scams are happening in several ways, including online phishing schemes, phone calls impersonating federal agencies, and AI-generated calls designed to sound like a grandchild.

“The number one rule to remember is if you receive a phone call, email, letter in the mail, etc., and a request/demand for money is made, stop,” the department said. “Chances are you are being scammed.”
Police said residents should be skeptical of demands for cash and unusual payment methods.
“No federal agency is going to call and demand cash be mailed off, picked up by an agent, or deposited in Bitcoin,” the department said.
The police department also warned about supposed lottery winnings and requests for payment in gift cards.
“If you won a lottery, you are not going to have to pay to receive the winnings or pay the taxes in Apple gift cards,” it said.
For calls that appear to come from family members seeking money, police advised meeting in person.
“If a loved one is calling for money, meet with your loved one in person and do not send money via any online service,” the department said.
Police encouraged residents to stay alert and seek help if they suspect a scam.
“Protect yourself and be vigilant keeping an eye out for possible scams,” the department said.
