EDWARDSVILLE – The next stretch of a shared use path running through downtown Edwardsville is one step closer to construction.
At their Feb. 3, 2026 meeting, Edwardsville City Council members unanimously approved a $150,237 engineering services agreement with Oates Associates, Inc. for the latest phase of the Route 66 Shared Use Path.
Under the agreement, Oates Associates, Inc. are set to perform construction engineering services for the latest section of the Route 66 Trail shared use path, spanning 1,980 feet along St. Louis Street from West Street to 2nd Street.
The agreement also states the future path will feature ADA curb ramps and entrances at side roads. In addition to the path itself, the project will also see the construction of a “road diet” from Vandalia Street to 2nd Street, allowing more room for the shared use path.
Alderman Chris Farrar asked if “plantings” could be installed along the shared use path, which Public Works Director Ryan Zwijack confirmed would be possible. He said two currently separated right and left turn lanes at the intersection of St. Louis and Vandalia Streets will be narrowed down to one lane for both right and left turns, allowing for plenty of greenspace in the area.
Project Manager Ben Miller with Oates Associates, Inc. wrote in a letter to city officials that construction is expected to begin this spring and be completed this summer, with a construction period of 50 working days.
