ALTON - The Three Rivers Project
Monday, January 19, 2026, is the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day of Service which honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy through community volunteering. The day focuses on civic engagement throughout the nation focusing on service and equality. The Sierra Club Piasa Palisades group has been participating in the MLK Day of Service for over a decade and invites you to do the same..
The Three Rivers Project of the Piasa Palisades Sierra Club Group is planning a neighborhood litter cleanup on Monday, January 19th, 2026, from 10 AM- 12 PM. The public is invited to help remove trash and litter from Hellrung Park and the surrounding neighborhood. Of all litter, plastic has the greatest potential to harm the environment, wildlife, and humans. “We are asking residents to join the Sierra Club to be a part of the solution to combat plastic pollution in neighborhoods near the Mississippi River by helping to pick up litter in Alton, IL.,” said Christine Favilla, Three Rivers Project Coordinator for the Sierra Club. “Up to 80% of marine plastic originates on land, and the creeks and rivers are a major route for plastic litter to be transported from inland communities to the ocean.”
You can honor Dr. King's Legacy by helping to clean up the neighborhood. Volunteers will meet at 10 AM at Hellrung Park by Fast Eddie's Fried Chicken at 7th Street and Central Avenue. Organizers will supply trash bags, safety vests, and gloves. The event will be canceled if there is inclement weather that morning such as rain or snow. Please dress warmly and bring your own water bottle. All are welcome
please invite your friends and family.
Alternately, if you would like to clean up your own street and need supplies, please stop by to grab some trash bags and gloves and head back to your neighborhood or along your favorite creek or river!
Please register at sc.org/MLK2026 where you will have access to a map of the exact location.
