The vest, which is expected to be delivered within ten weeks, was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s and will be embroidered with the message “In memory of Odin - EOW 8/22/24.” The protective gear is designed to help safeguard Rico while he serves alongside Officer Archer in the field.

“We are incredibly grateful for this donation that will help protect K9 Rico while he serves our community,” said Sergeant Morelli, who oversees the K9 program. “This vest could be lifesaving for Rico as he works alongside Officer Archer in the field.”

Officer Archer, Rico’s handler, said the vest provides reassurance during their work.

“Rico is not just a working dog; he’s my partner. Knowing he will have this additional protection gives me peace of mind as we respond to calls and conduct our duties,” he said.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to providing bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to law enforcement and related agency dogs across the United States. The vests are U.S.-made, custom-fitted, and certified by the National Institute of Justice.

Since its founding, the organization has supplied more than 6,225 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states. The program is open to dogs at least 20 months old who are actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible.

There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s nationwide. Each vest costs $1,800, weighs between four and five pounds, and comes with a five-year warranty. Donations are tax-deductible, with $1,050 sponsoring a single vest.
