ALTON — The 32nd annual Community Tree Lighting at Lincoln-Douglas Square was once again a rousing success on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, featuring the arrival of Santa Claus, caroling, cookies, hot cocoa, and speeches. The event culminated at 6:45 p.m. Friday when Mayor David Goins hit the switch that illuminated the holiday tree.

Organizers aim to bring the community together, foster holiday spirit, and collect donations for The Salvation Army, which launched its Kettle campaign during the ceremony.

The Salvation Army campaign raises funds to assist families in the region with toys, hygiene products, food and other essentials throughout the holiday season. Attendees can also contribute canned food donations at the event.

Alton Main Street coordinated the Community Tree Lighting event. The tree is donated by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club.

“Despite the sprinkles, we had a good turnout as usual for the Community Tree Lighting,” said Alton Main Street representative Sara McGibany. “Alton Main Street is honored to have the opportunity to bring the community together for these special occasions, and we thank everyone who attended for kicking off the holiday season in Downtown Alton.”

The ceremony included performances by local groups, such as a Girl Scout troop singing Christmas carols and several dance groups.
