
ALTON/BRIGHTON - A Brighton-area man was killed late Sunday night, June 14, 2026, in a fiery crash in Alton after his truck left the roadway, struck a parked vehicle, and then a tree, according to the Madison County coroner.

Madison County Coroner Nicholas P. Novacich on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, identified the man as Damon E. Bornes, 37, of Brighton. The crash occurred at about 11:22 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026, in the 2200 block of State Street in Alton, authorities said.
Evidence at the scene showed Bornes’ truck was traveling northbound on State Street before it struck a parked vehicle, left the roadway, and hit a tree, according to the coroner’s office. The truck then burst into flames.
Alton Police Department personnel arrived a short time later. Firefighters with the Alton Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze.
Madison County Coroner’s Investigator Annie Evans responded to the scene and pronounced Bornes dead at 12:07 a.m. on June 15, 2026.
An autopsy was performed to help establish identification and the cause of death. The preliminary cause of death was blunt chest trauma, according to the coroner’s office.
Routine toxicological testing is pending, and a final cause of death will not be issued until all reports are finalized, authorities said.
No other injuries were reported in the crash.
The case remains under investigation by the Alton Police Department and the Madison County Coroner’s Office.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Harrison Funeral Home in Alton.
