ALTON - Madison Avenue in Alton is closed to through traffic between Belle Street and Gesche Street through Monday, June 15, 2026, for street repairs by Burns & Gillihan, contractors for the City of Alton, according to a road closure notice.
The closure began on June 10, 2026, and affects Madison Avenue from Belle Street to Gesche Street. The work is being done for street repair, the notice said.

Detour signs are in place, and signs were posted before traffic pattern changes on side streets, according to the notice.
The Alton Police Department advised that motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during the closure.
"Drivers are also urged to reduce speed, remain alert for changing conditions, obey construction signage, and avoid using mobile devices while approaching and traveling through the work zone," the police department said.
The notice also warned drivers not to move or drive around traffic control barricades, stating that violators may be cited and prosecuted.
“Everyone involved with the construction of this important project thanks you for your continued cooperation,” the city announcement said.
