SPRINGFIELD – Multiple recent social media posts have falsely claimed a new “Tire Tax” is going into effect across Illinois on July 1, 2026. Records from the Illinois General Assembly tell a different story.

“The legislation was sponsored and passed by Illinois Democrats and signed into law by JB Pritzker and will become law on July 1st,” one post reads. “You will see an increase in prices starting Wednesday.”

The posts cite Illinois Senate Bill 3943, which has not been signed into law. While the bill has been sponsored by three Democratic senators, no other action has been taken on the item since it was referred to the Senate’s Assignments Committee in February of 2026. Even if the bill had become law, it would not take effect until next year on July 1, 2027.

The bill as currently written would impose a 10-cent fee on the retail purchase of new or used tires. Proceeds would be allocated to the Department of Public Health “for a grant to the Illinois Lyme Association's Tick Research, Education, and Evaluation project.”

A separate bill, SB3387, would impose a new $2.50 fee on the sale of new and used tires starting July 1, 2026, with proceeds distributed across multiple state funds. However, this bill also has not been signed into law, having last been re-referred to the Assignments Committee in May of 2026.

The State of Illinois already imposes a Tire User Fee of $2.50 per tire sold or delivered in the state, which applies to vehicles, aircraft, farm wagons, combines, street sweepers, and other road maintenance machinery.
