Throughout the month of September, community members can donate clean, gently-used costumes for all ages at Hayner Library. In October, families can come “shop” for costumes and take home one costume per household member in time for Halloween and trick-or-treating.

“The costume swap is brand new this year,” said Mary Cordes, Hayner’s executive director. “The KidsSpace staff came up with this idea. They come up with some really great ideas, and this is one of them.”

The library will accept costumes for all ages, though the focus is kids’ costumes. The KidsSpace staff and Cordes want to ensure all kids can enjoy Halloween this year.

Patrons who donate a costume will receive a shopping voucher. They can then come shop from 2–5 p.m. on Oct. 2 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 3, 2026.

If you don’t have a costume to donate, you can come shop from 2–5 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 24.

The goal, Cordes explained, is to recycle costumes and save people money. She recognizes that costumes can be “crazy expensive,” especially as kids grow quickly and few children want to wear the same costume year after year. This will allow families to find new costumes for their children without breaking the bank.

“The library, the whole point of us is to save people money,” she added. “You can do everything at the library for free, and here’s another one.”
