EDWARDSVILLE - A large MBI tractor-trailer caught fire on Interstate 255 and drove off the road to an exit ramp, briefly closing the ramp before firefighters extinguished the blaze, officials said on Thursday morning, March 5, 2026.

The fire involved an MBI tractor-trailer that pulled over on a ramp in Edwardsville, according to Edwardsville Deputy Fire Chief Robert Morgan. The ramp “did close ... for a short period of time” and “should have since reopened,” Cathy Hensley, a communications coordinator for the City of Edwardsville, said.

“Thankfully, because of the Edwardsville Fire and Mitchell Fire Department efforts to extinguish the fire, the MBI tractor-trailer driver was able to drive the truck away from the scene in the vehicle,” Morgan told Hensley.

MBI is “a privately-owned and operated Illinois Corporation with a nationwide service footprint,” according to company information provided. The company said it has “over 40 terminals across the nation,” hauls “more than 100,000 tons of trash daily,” and provides “a full range of waste-handling services” in addition to hauling.
