Officers and emergency medical personnel provided medical aid, and the victim was transported to a St. Louis-area hospital for treatment, according to police. The victim is listed in "critical but stable condition."

Belleville Police said the Patrol Division, assisted by the Investigations Division, identified a juvenile male suspect believed to be involved in the shooting.

At about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, the suspect was taken into custody in the 4100 block of Shirley Drive in Belleville “with the assistance of the Belleville/St. Clair County Regional Special Response Team (SRT),” police said. He is being held at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center.

“At this stage of the investigation, the incident appears to be isolated, and the individuals involved are known to one another,” police said. The department said the Investigations Division is following up on multiple leads and will present the case to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for review after the investigation is completed.

Police said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to contact the Belleville Police Department Investigations Division at 618-234-1212.

“Due to the ages of the victim and suspect, no further information will be released at this time,” police said.
