ALTON – Local businesses in Alton have launched a food drive to restock the Salvation Army’s food pantry, running from Feb. 9 to Feb. 20, 2026.

Donations can be dropped off at participating locations, including Freer Auto Body, Arrow Signs and Outdoor Advertising, the Alton Memorial Hospital gift shop, Carrollton Bank’s Alton branch, Evergreen Senior Living, Persnickety by Jen Farley, Simmons Hanly Conroy, and Nicki G’s Catering.
Gloria Vaughn of the Salvation Army emphasized the need for protein items such as beef, fish, chicken, and pork, which are often in short supply. Other suggested donations include potatoes, canned tuna, pasta, ramen noodles, and food items with flip-top cans that are easy for children to prepare and enjoy.
Margaret Freer, coordinating the effort, also offered to pick up excess beef from local butchering. She noted that the Salvation Army maintains a strong partnership with Schwegel's Market, which could facilitate meat deliveries or pickups.
“We have so much to be thankful for, and I truly believe if everyone does just a little, we can make a big difference,” Freer said, encouraging community involvement to support those in need. "Let's feed the multitude!"
