JERSEY COUNTY - The Dr. Silas Hamilton Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently donated a braille American flag to the Jersey County Public Library for public display.
The Braille American flag donation reflects the chapter’s ongoing commitment to education and accessibility in the community.

The flag will be available for public viewing at the Jersey County Public Library.
The donation, made by the local chapter of NSDAR, took place in Jerseyville, where the chapter has been active since its organization on November 20, 1963.
The Jersey County chapter is named after Dr. Silas Hamilton, a physician and native of Tinmouth, Vermont, who passed away in Jersey County in 1834. Dr. Hamilton is noted for his bequest of $4,000 to establish a primary school in Otterville, Jersey County. This school, built in 1834 and later replaced by a stone building in 1870, is recognized as the first free school in Illinois.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1890, focuses on historic preservation, education, and patriotism. More than one million women have participated in the organization since its inception.
