SWANSEA - The Swansea Police Department has announced the passing of retired K-9 Leo, a valued member of the force from March 2016 until August 2020.

Swansea Police officials said the following: "Leo served alongside officers with dedication and courage, leaving a lasting impact on both the department and the community."

Following his retirement, Leo was cared for by Officer VanWaes and his family. Officer VanWaes, who currently serves with the Bloomington Police Department, mourns the loss of his longtime partner.

In another statement, the Swansea Police Department expressed their condolences and acknowledged the unique bond between a K-9 and their handler. They asked the community to keep Officer VanWaes and his family in their thoughts during this difficult time.

“Leo served with heart, courage, and unwavering dedication," the police department said. "His impact on our officers and community will not be forgotten.

“Rest easy, Leo. Your watch is complete.”
