WOOD RIVER — A two-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 143 near Enviroway left one critically injured Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, 2025, Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells said.

The accident occurred shortly before 8:48 a.m. on Wednesday when a small passenger vehicle, driven by a woman, attempted to turn left onto Enviroway from eastbound Route 143. The vehicle collided with a white pickup truck traveling westbound in the slow lane, also driven by a woman.

Chief Wells said the driver in the small vehicle was critically injured and airlifted to a St. Louis-area hospital for treatment.

The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured in the crash, Chief Wells said.

Wood River Police Department and Fire Department responded promptly to the scene. The Illinois Department of Transportation and neighboring police agencies from Alton and East Alton also assisted with traffic control during the response.

No further details about the cause of the crash or the conditions of the injured were immediately available.

Authorities continue to investigate.
