PIASA — A group of education pathway students from Southwestern High School spent Tuesday exploring the teaching profession during Future Teacher Day at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). The event, held Nov. 18, 2025, gathered aspiring educators from across the region for a day of inspiration, hands-on learning, and professional development.
The day began with a keynote address by Dr. Victor Gomez, Illinois Teacher of the Year, who shared his personal journey and encouraged students to “teach with purpose, passion, and the belief that every voice matters.” His remarks set the tone for a program focused on the impact and responsibility inherent in the teaching profession.

Following the opening session, students participated in a range of interactive workshops aimed at deepening their understanding of education.
During lunch, attendees heard a second keynote from Ms. Monet Webster, who delivered a motivational message to further inspire the future teachers.
Southwestern High School students returned home feeling more confident in their career choice.
“It made me even more excited about becoming a teacher,” one student said. “I left feeling like I can make a real difference.”
Future Teacher Day provided these students not only with insight into the profession but also a reaffirmation of the important role they will play in shaping future generations.
For them, the event was more than a field trip — it was a meaningful step toward the classrooms they hope to lead one day.
