ALTON - The Metro East and St. Louis region is being hit with heavier snow than predicted. Some areas north of St. Louis may end up receiving up to 5 inches of snowfall. Other areas are expected to receive around 3-4 inches of snowfall.
National Weather Service in St. Louis Meteorologist Jared Maples said the snowfall has definitely arrived earlier than previously expected. Wood River and Granite City had several reports of accidents in the early afternoon. The St. Louis area has also several reports of crashes.

"Two bands of snow hit the area, and we expect pretty widespread snowfall and higher overall totals," Maples added.
The St. Clair Emergency Management Agency released this information around 1 p.m. on Monday:
"St. Clair County CENCOM is currently working on 12 traffic accidents, 9 of which are on I-255 or I-64. Please avoid travel on the west end of the county, including the interstates."
Maples said that by evening, the roadways will likely be hazardous. “Areas north of the City of St. Louis could expect amounts to up to 5 inches of snow,” he said. The National Weather Service in St. Louis said the snow will last through the evening. Maples predicted the snowfall would last until 9 p.m.
