ALTON/GODFREY - A fire broke out Saturday evening, Nov. 22, 2025, at the State Farm Insurance agency operated by Dwight Tungett in Godfrey in the 30 block of Delmar Avenue with an Alton address location, prompting a response from two local fire departments. The fire agencies arrived around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the business located near the border of the Godfrey Fire Protection District and Alton Fire Department territories.
Alton firefighters arrived approximately one minute before Godfrey units and found flames at the rear porch area of the building. The fire was extinguished by the Alton Fire Department. Following the suppression, the Godfrey Fire Protection District, led by Assistant Chief Tom Wills, conducted the investigation. The Tungett business is actually within the Godfrey Fire Protection District.

Wills reported that the fire caused smoke damage to the inside of the building and that the back portion of the structure will require reconstruction. However, he noted that the overall structure is salvageable. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. He said from what he was told at the scene, Tungett's staff can work from home, so the business operation will continue as normal on Monday.
Assistant Chief Wills praised the Alton Fire Department for their efforts and highlighted the cooperative relationship between the two fire agencies.
“The two fire agencies have a great team approach to these types of fires when they are close to each jurisdiction,” Wills said. “Godfrey Fire always works well with the Alton Fire Department.”
