VANDALIA — The community of Vandalia is rallying around the family of Kylie Marie Toberman, a 14-year-old Vandalia resident whose life ended on Nov. 14, 2025.
Authorities have charged Arnold B. Rivera with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of the 14-year-old. The case has left the community mourning the loss of a young girl described by family as bright, caring, and talented.

Kylie, known for her inclusive nature and loyalty to friends and family, was also an accomplished wrestler recognized for her determination and discipline. Her mother, Megan Zeller, and siblings Kamilla, Korah and Bryson are currently facing the difficult aftermath of the tragedy, Tiffany Walker said in a GoFundMe campaign.
Walker established the GoFundMe for the family. The family is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues, but has limited the information they can share publicly about the murder case.
In the meantime, they are seeking financial support to manage legal expenses, time away from work, and other unforeseen costs arising from the situation.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Megan and her children during this challenging period. Organizers encourage those unable to contribute financially to share the fundraiser and keep the family in their thoughts.
“Kylie was a loyal friend, a devoted sister, and someone who could brighten any room simply by being in it,” the family said in a statement. “Thank you for your compassion, your support, and your prayers.”
In a Saturday night Facebook post, Vandalia Community Unit School District #203, in far southwest Illinois, released the following statement about Toberman's death:
"Dear Families,
"We are deeply saddened to share that a student in our district has passed away far too soon,' the message, from Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Garrison, began. 'This is heartbreaking news for our school community.
"The situation involves an active law enforcement investigation. Out of respect for the family and the investigative process, we will not be sharing additional details at this time. We will coordinate closely with law enforcement and provide updates when appropriate.
"We recognize that this news is incredibly difficult for students, staff, and families. Our crisis response team and school counselors will be available on Monday and in the days ahead to offer support.
"Please join us in keeping the student’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic and painful time. We will lean on one another as we care for our students and each other."
Kylie Marie Toberman was born Jan. 21, 2011. Her family remembers her as forever 14.
