The police urged residents to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the department by calling 618-656-2131. Officials emphasized that legitimate agencies do not demand payment through gift cards or wire transfers.
“To protect yourself and your family, call companies back using trusted numbers found on official bills or websites,” the department advised. “If someone claims to be in trouble, verify the information with other family members or trusted friends. Scammers often create a sense of urgency, but do not act under pressure — always confirm the situation independently.”
Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by fraud is encouraged to contact Edwardsville Police.
