ALTON — Nathan Woods, 41, was taken into custody on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, after he allegedly set fire to a woman’s house on Gilham Avenue in Alton on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025.

The Alton Police Department arrested Woods and he has been charged with Aggravated Arson, a Class X felony, and Residential Arson, a Class 1 felony. The Aggravated Arson charge alleges Woods knowingly set the fire while someone was inside the home.

According to charging documents, Woods ignited the front porch of the residence in the 3500 block of Gilham Avenue, causing damage to the porch and siding.

Neighbors helped extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. Officers found Woods nearby along with a gas can.

Woods was booked into custody and is awaiting his initial court appearance.

These charges, as well as the statements made herein, are based upon probable cause. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
